Program description: Helping students with learning and thinking differences navigate mental health and emotional challenges

In this session, Dr. Andrew Kahn will share data, factors contributing to neurodivergent kids’ mental health challenges, and tangible strategies and tips for parents and educators to provide attendees with a deeper understanding of the intersection of neurodiversity and mental health and ways to help children navigate different emotions and situations.

Participants will walk away from the session with:

  • Recent and relevant data that underscores the realities of what neurodivergent kids are facing emotionally and socially, and showcases the disparities between neurodivergent and neurotypical children

  • Recommendations and tips for parents on how to support their neurodivergent child and help them navigate challenges with mental health (i.e. self-calming strategies, tracking/log best practices, when it’s time to seek additional support, etc.)

  • Recommended strategies for educators on how to support neurodivergent children emotionally and mentally in the classroom (i.e. simple but impactful accommodations, how to implement life skills like managing emotions into the classroom learning, conversation-starters, etc.)
